Eating Healthier

As a runner, it’s so easy to think “It’s OK, I’m going to run today” and proceed to eat whatever I want. Which is pretty often ice cream, chocolate, brownies… and then I make myself sick. And is not definitely not healthy.

Another Mother Runner

OR it’s the OTHER extreme, and I eat tons when I really don’t need to be eating all that. One of my new years resolutions was to eat more veggies (which is hard to do with such a busy schedule), and I’ve been able to incorporate them into my daily routine, but I want to set higher goals than that (no, I’m not starting the Paleo diet… yet).

Cutting out white flour and sugar is about as lofty of the goals that I’ll setting this summer, while trying to run in the summer heat!
I’m in Virginia, and SERIOUSLY this humility is worse than usual (since  I’d really know what usual is since this is my second May here!).

There are a few really important things to include in your diet is you are a woman running. The first and foremost thing you should be worrying about is your iron levels (this is the one I struggle with the most). This is vital in transporting oxygen through your bloodstream, as well as providing a key building block of muscle tissue. One thing I found interesting is that caffeinated products will counteract with your iron intake… so wait a couple hours after eating or taking your iron supplement.

The next important dietary need is calcium, (you know, all that stress on your bones in running). If you don’t drink milk, purchase calcium added products (soy dream, rice milk, orange juice).

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but the third most important thing to include is FAT, from nuts, olive oil, seeds, and avocado but stay away from saturated fats (which mainly come from animal products. ewww).

Notice the lack of white flour and sugar in this list? Yup. Need to cut those out!

March Runs

I did it. I ran 42 miles in the month of February- which was exilerating! I certainly pushed myself hard, starting with a .73m run at the beginning of the month while trying to break in my shoes, and making it up to 7m on the 23rd. Following Hal Higdons running plan for this race has been a complete failure, BUT I’m going to post up his calender plan in prep for my May 1/2 marathon to make THAT race as painless as possible!

I’ve only got a couple more weeks of “winter running” left… (it was 80F yesterday for my run), and then I’m buying myself the cutest pink shorts from LuluLemon (Run Tracker Short). I’d buy them today if they would only bother to carry them so I could BUY them – I mean, c’mon! I’m in love with the style and the color and it’s a NEED to run in them for my first 1/2 marathon. I’m kinda getting worried they won’t carry them in time for my race =( Well, since it’s March, it’s time to go over my March Goals.

  • Run 60 miles (total) this month
  • Finish the Shamrock 1/2 Marathon
  • Go rock climbing (maybe for my birthday!?)
  • Eat Breakfast EVERYDAY
  • Smile and Laugh every day!
  • Take the time to make good healthy meals, three times per week
  • Stop. Take time to journal. I feel so much more balanced when I journal.

It’s not just about running, it’s about balancing a healthy lifestyle. It’s not about losing wieght, it’s about being comfortable in the skin you are in. If we are maintaining a healthy lifestyle, our body weight will settle in a place that’s healthy for us!

It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas…

We had the most amazing weekend EVER! We spent Saturday in Williamsburg… which included several destinations:

Williamsburg Antique Mall
We spent about 2 hours wandering around the Williamsburg Antique Mall… truthfully, I read most of a Nancy Drew while Tyler looked around (haha). It was really fun wandering down the aisles and tucked away in a corner reading a book!

Williamsburg Premium Outlets
This place, unlike Williamsburg Antique Mall, was PACKED! After spending about 20 minutes looking for parking, we scored a sweet spot RIGHT in front of the Coach store. Except, they had a line out the door and around the store, so we went to cheaper stores (since Coach is a little out of our Christmas gift budget!).

Yankee Candle Store
Next on our stopping list was the Yankee Candle Store because:
1. We’ve never been there.
2. We wanted a candle.
3. It’s decorated AMAZINGLY for Christmas.
4. It was on the way :)
We were SHOCKED at how cool it was inside and store, and it’s obviously going to be a future stop every time we’re in Williamsburg!

Mermaid Bookstore
This is one of our favorative stops in Colonial Williamsburg, we purchase our cups of coffee and head over the fabulous little bookstore. We exchanged numbers with the owner so he could give us a call if he has any old Jane Austin books come in!

Colonial Christmas Shoppes
We checked out about 10 little Christmas shoppes, doolled over the ornaments, bought chocolate peanut-butter fudge and cumin gouda cheese. Mmmmm…

then on Saterday…

We went ICE SKATING! This picture is mere proof that we made it onto the ice! Tyler and I skated around hand in hand for nearly an hour, and he did SO well for the first time on the ice. I was so proud  of how wonderfully he did. His brother and girlfriend also came along and they had the best time too (and we even caught them kissing!). Afterwards we found ourselves some hot chocolate and told family stories. I’m so grateful for the amazing family God’s put me into, and thank him on a constant basis for His faithfulness in my life!
