Race Weekend Update

Keeping on Track with my goal to run 700 miles this year!

Keeping on Track with my goal to run 700 miles this year!

Well, I haven’t been a great blogger, but I HAVE been keeping up with my running goals that I set for 2013! I wanted to run 700 miles this year, and I’m still on track for that (what a miracle!). I always kind of take some time off in the summer, since I have trouble running in the heat, so I’m happy to be ahead.
So, I was assigned my Bib Numbers earlier this week for my 8k and Half Marathon, and I was SO excited to get them :) This weekend I will log 18.1 miles. OMG!!

We got into Williamsburg last night, and toured around the town a little bit… my husband took the photo with a little sun flare. Mmmm, he’s got a good eye!IMG_7671 IMG_7677

Anyways, back to race talk- we ran the 8k this morning, and they thought they’d add a few more hills to the course. I found out the hard way! How am I supposed to run a half marathon when my muscles are shredded from running hills for 4 miles today!? Needless to say, I’m a little worried about 7am tomorrow morning when my half marathon starts, and it’s supposed to get up to 90F weather. It’s supposed to be an incredibility hilly course and I’m a little nervous about running it in this heat! So I’m spending the evening off my feet and hydrating. Race updates to come!

Back to Running… and Blogging!

biking

Proof that I own a bike.

Well, I might not have been around much in the blogging world… which means that I’ve been CRAZY busy in real life. Plus, I finished school in December, so now I don’t use blogging as an excuse to not do homework (anyone else know how I feel?). I guess I just needed a break from talking about running, and actually get outside and enjoy the sunshine! We also bought a house and moved in, repainted and decorated the whole house, I graduated with the big ceremony and everything, and have been training for this race!

I got this bike last year for my birthday, and now that we don’t live in an apartment and I don’t have to drag it down 3 flights of stairs, I get to take it out more frequently! I sometimes even use it to run to the grocery store if my hubs has the car (we are all economical and stuff and can live off one car… now I just need him to allow me to bike to work!). I love being able to bike more and drive less.

Anyways, back to running (because that’s what we care about, right?)… I’m running my first half marathon for the year in a week. YAY!! I’m super stoked, because this is my third race in Williamsburg and it’s my FAVORITE place to run in the whole world. This is my list from last year of why I’m beyond, out of the world, excited!!
In fact, I’m running with the hubs on Saturday for a 10k race, and then hitting the trails for the half marathon on Sunday… I know, I sound so hardcore. I’m going to be crazy sore the whole week… Can you see why I’m so excited? That, and hours and hours in a hot tub. Indeed, this is Heaven on Earth.

Updates to come soon.

1/2 Marathon Training Plan

I’m back at it. My half marathon is the first weekend in June, and I’m so excited! We (my husband and I) ran the Williamsburg Run for the Dream 1/2 Marathon last year, and it is by far my favorite route in the world. I’m always looking for an excuse to run in Williamsburg, and I always look forward to those glorious 13.1 miles.
We have a lot of changes potentially coming down the chute in the next couple months, so I started my training a little earlier than necessary… just in case there are some ‘set-backs’ to my long runs.

Last weekend I enjoyed my 7 mile run in my favorite park, it was about 40 F so I was bundled up for the first couple miles and discarded my gloves once I warmed up. On the first mile, I found a brand new smart phone! I called a few of the last contacts and left it at the running store I was running with. Hopefully it found its rightful owner.  295550_345102265606645_866713775_n

About a week ago I ran on the boardwalk during the sunrise. I paused to catch my breath, and looked like a total tourist to take some pictures. I tend to do my shorter runs on the boardwalk because it’s about a 6 mile loop, and it would just be the end of the world if I had to run a lap or something. How can I not love running when it gets me our in God’s beautiful creation every morning while the rest of the world is still asleep?

Where do your runs take you? When is the best time for you to run?

Keep out of the Porta-Potty

Question from a runner:

I’ve been running for a couple years, but my half-marathons are constantly plagued with needing to stop in at the porta-pottys. What am I doing wrong?

My perspective:

Ever been on the trail (or treadmill) and you just have to go? This is when I’m delighted that I’m on a treadmill and can hop off and utilize the washroom. The dreadful part is when I’m at least 5 miles from the closest washroom, and to my delight, I am in the woods.

Let me tell you a story, it was only a few days before my wedding. I was running to deal with stress (of not fitting into my dress. JK), and along came the urge. Yes. I had to go. Being in a strange city where I generally don’t run, I was not aware of the need to stay away from certain plants, or even what they looked like. Yes. Poison Ivy was in the general area of the woods that I chose to, ahem, defecate in.  Perfect. It wasn’t a bad rash, but it gave the boys something to laugh about at their bachelor party.

Ever experience this… situation? The burning gut? I think the biggest problem was that I wasn’t on my regular diet (I’m pretty regimented), and wasn’t running at my regular times. I know a lot of people that have their races ruined because of their need for quality time with a porta-potty. How do we avoid this?

In the excitement of race day, we often change up our eating schedule and are running at a different time of day. This can be extremely upsetting to our nervous system, especially if you suffer from gastritis issues. Even if there aren’t any issues, the GI tract can be jostled by the running movement.

TALK TO A DOCTOR: A doctor can help you pinpoint issues like lactose or gluten intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, or other gastritis issues.

FOOD DIARY:  A food diary can help you avoid problems while racing. High fiber foods go through your system quickly, causing problems. Fatty greasy foods can make you sick when running on either end, since they are hard to digest.

FIGURE OUT WHAT WORKS: If eating a banana and peanut butter an hour before your works on an average day, don’t switch it up. By the time race day comes by, you should have developed a routine that mimics the actual day, so there isn’t any surprises. Stick to the plan.

Can you relate? What are your tips to keep out of the porta-potty on race day?

Featured Writer: Jessica @ Eat Drink Breathe Sweat

I am SO excited to feature an amazing blogger from Eat Drink Breathe Sweat, who I have been following (stalking?) for about 8 months. When I asked her if she was interested on being featured on Girls Run Faster, she was delighted to write up this most exciting journey of her marathon training. I’m not going to like, I was incredibly inspired by her story and think it’s the most romantic thing that her an her husband are training together!

Me? Run a marathon?!

I’m so totally honored to be a guest blogger over here at Girls Run Faster – and to be talking about something that I truthfully never thought I’d ever be talking about in the context of my own personal journey: running a marathon.

The old adage “if I can do it, you can, too” has never felt more spot-on to me than it does today.

You see, I never, ever thought I’d be “that” person – y’know, a marathoner. I looked at them with such awe…and from a distance, always. Thinking how incredible it would be to run 26.2 miles – but also just how daunting it sounded too. And how unreachable it felt for me, personally.

I always thought I’d be on the outside looking in. Never the other way around.

But here I am, just weeks away from my first 26.2.
…well, here WE are, I should say.

You see, I didn’t decide to run a marathon – my husband and I decided to conquer it together. It actually all started years ago when my husband told me that on his list of ‘things to do before I turn 35,” he wanted to run a full marathon. At the time, I totally scoffed at him, thinking it was just a pipe dream, and would never come to fruition. I mean, I truly never thought I’d EVER have it in me to run 26.2 miles…I mean that is just a ridiculous distance, is it not??

And honestly? It still feels like a ridiculous distance – but the difference came last year after I saw a few of my blog friends conquer 26.2 and they inspired the heck outta me. They ran with such heart and a fearlessness that I totally envied. What really sealed the deal for me, though? When I decided that 2012 would be my year of ‘no limits’ – of knocking down boundaries and predefined expectations of what I could be, could do, could become if I just stopped limiting myself.

So together, we committed.

And we haven’t regretted that decision, whatsoever.  Quite the opposite, actually. It’s become an incredible bonding experience for us as a couple, but also a huge individual growth opportunity for each of us, too. I never saw this ‘side effect’ of training coming, I’ll tell you that. I simply envisioned lots of running, lots of purple toenails and a really tired body by the end of it.

But instead? This has become so much more than just a training schedule – it’s become an amazing journey, much more so spiritually than even physically, which is crazy to say considering what we’re putting our bodies through at the moment!

So when people ask me now: “what motivates you?” or “how do you keep upping those miles week after week?”, my answer is simple: “I just *really* want to see what’s around the next bend in the path.” I’m so curious to see where we’ll ‘be’ by the end of this thing that I am constantly excited and energized to keep on truckin’ through training.

So while I’m not a marathoner….yet, what I will urge you to do is this. Next time you’re faced with a challenge (of ANY sort) that scares you and leaves you wanting to run the other way: stop. Think about why it scares you. Think about why your first instinct is to run the other way. Is it because you’re too busy living in your own boundary-filled, limit-filled reality? If so, I say to you “have no limits today.”

Trust me when I say that it is absolutely worth it.

Swim | Bike | Run … and hydrating.

Don’t tell anyone… But I’ve starting biking. I have a super sweet bike, and in our super tiny cramped apartment, we have no room for it except leaning up against my bed. Our room looks great.
So after having it leaning against my bed for 3 months, my school/work load kind of let up, and I introduced her to the world! Lately I’ve been biking the 3 miles to the beach, running about 5 miles on the sand, and jumping in the ocean for a swim for about 20 minutes. After I bike back, this whole exertion has taken about 2 hours!

People tease me that I should do a triathlon. Nope. I’d rather keep all of my miles in the single digits when doing all three :) (maybe I could be convinced to do a mini-mini-mini triathlon? We’ll see!)

Basically, being near the water is what I’ve been doing in order to ‘keep cool’ while working out this summer. Another important aspect of healthy summer working out is keeping hydrated. I know, everyone keeps talking about our water intake, but what’s some tips on making sure you have enough?

In this heat, it’s important to keep the hydration up… water is vital to our athletic performance and health. Before a long run, a race, or a training workout, drink plenty of fluids. The day before an event, drink extra water and monitor the color of your urine. The goal is pale yellow, not clear.

The morning of the event, drink 2 cups (8 oz.) of fluid two hours beforehand. This gives your kidneys enough time to process the liquids, giving you sufficient time to empty your bladder before the start of your event.

These tips should help out in keeping you hydrated in this extra-hot summer, and will definitely help with post-race throwing up and other problems.

Happy 4th of July AND Goal Setting.

Happy 4th of July to all my blogger/running friends! I hope you had an amazing break from life and were able to enjoy some serious BBQ and fireworks. We had a great BBQ with tons of food and it was so tempting to eat the the Strawberry Creme Pie because it had white chocolate (?!) in it! OMG. Heavenly.

Amazing 4th of July Pie by Shelby

Back to trying to eat healthy.

I think July is a great time to look back on the year and consider what we’ve accomplished.

Here are a few things that I did; and never thought I could:

If you set goals, you are more likely to achieve what you want, and do even more than you ever thought possible! This can be setting a goal to run a half marathon, or doing a couple in a year. Choose a goal and soon you’ll be crushing your half-marathon, setting a new PR, increasing endurance knowing you are being challenged and growing.

Tips in Goal Setting

Create a Plan.
I usually set a goal for the month for mileage for running, how many times I want to lift weights, and recently (with the gorgeous weather and awful parking situation at the beach) I’ve been adding bike mileage. When I’m training for a race, I have a strict run schedule that I have mapped out in my daily planner, and this forces me to plan around my runs. Typically my long runs are on the weekend, but that’s just because I work full-time. Do whatever day works best for you! I’m careful to add mileage slowly to avoid injury, and to be extremely consistent so I’m building on my past runs.

Join a Run Club.
I have a group of girls that I run trails or on the beach with. Mostly for motivation, but also for safety. We have a flexible schedule, and don’t make it out every week (mostly because I plan them and my schedule isn’t consistent) but they constantly push me… I’m so thankful for my running girls!
Here’s a list of free run clubs & classes in the Virginia Beach Area.

Mix it Up.
When it’s over 100F, I can’t run outside. I can hardly do it in 80F weather (remember, I grew up in Canada?). So I use a treadmill. Or run at 5:30am. Or run on the sand/water at the beach. It really depends what I can do. But I’m constantly switching up my runs. Get some hill training in. Cross training. Biking. Hiking. Speed training. I love getting out of town because there are so many great trails to explore!

While exploring LuluLemons website, I found this awesome little Goal Setting worksheet. There are more to life than running and health goals, and this little worksheet is great about combing all your goals to holistic health!

What are your goals?

Back from Vacation!

Just came back from the best vacation ever! Tyler’s family is much more relaxed on vacation than my family was, so it was an adjustment… and I had to FORCE myself to slow down! We didn’t even have Internet.  Even though it was more relaxed than what my family does, we still did a lot of stuff, and kayaking was one of them! We went twice last week, and I got stuck a couple times because the water was so low- AND I almost died getting stuck over a water fall with rocks jutting out at the bottom! Don’t worry; we only had class 1 rapids on the first two miles, and the rest was pretty calm. :)

Since we were nestled in the mountains in the middle of nowhere, there were plenty of hills to train on. Not that I’m actually training for anything right now, but I can pretend. :)   I was seriously sore every day that I ran. I did a couple four-mile runs, but on those mountain trails, it felt like twice that! It was so awesome to run on such gorgeous trails.Williamsburg Run for the Dream

I did terrible on not eating sugar during our trip, and I’m going to have to pay for it for a couple days. So back to the strict diet from here on in! :) How are your summer fitness goals coming along? What do you find the hardest to maintain during the warmer months?

Williamsburg Run for the Dream

Our lives have kind of spun out of control since the race last weekend, hence no update on how it went! The Williamsburg Run for the Dream was by FAR the hardest route I’ve ever ran in my life, and there was no way we could have prepared for it living in flat Virginia Beach!

Back to the beginning :)

It was supposed to be rainy and miserable all weekend, but Sunday morning rolled around and it was BEAUTIFUL 70F… and most of the race was in the shade. I was in awe of the trees and the gorgeous terrain. We took the shuttle down to William and Mary pretty early (about 6:00am) after checking out of our hotel room. Once we got down to the race site, we could pick out the serious runners who were in their routine. We kinda stretched and I rubbed Tyler’s back and neck for a while… until it was time to get into our corrals.

At about mile two, the HILLS started. This is about when Tyler and I split up, since our paces were not matching up with the hills. At first, I was determined to not let them beat me… so I kept a pretty good pace, and passed the 2:30 pace group. There was even a brief moment that I considered trying to catch up with the 2:15 pace group! I felt like I was doing pretty good until mile EIGHT when they had us track back the hills we JUST conquered. Screw that. By that point I was in serious pain and started losing time… so I walked/ran the rest of the hills that lasted until mile 12.

All I can tell you in that I’ve NEVER been happier to reach the end of a race and pass under the 2:30 sign, which was my goal!!

To be honest, this is one of the things I’m most proud of doing!

When I crossed the finish line and heard my name announced, I wanted to cry. I’m pretty sure a few trickling tears may have slid down my face!

This race proved a few things to me.

First, that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. This is a huge reminder to keep working hard to complete my bachelor’s degree this fall. Just like this race, it’s a mind game. I had to work hard to keep my pace every mile, just like I have to work hard to keep my homework up to date every day.
Second,  if I can run a brutal half marathon and hit my goal time, I know there are people out there that can start the “from the couch to a 5k” training program. I know there are people out there that can run that 10k race they’re afraid of… and I KNOW you can start training for a half marathon.
